Product detailed description
In 1769, British industrialist William Stephens purchased the glass factory in Marinha Grande, a small town surrounded by a vast pine forest planted in the sand. This unique location, combined with the prominent support of the Marquis of Pombal and the protection of King José I, allowed the factory to thrive. It soon reached the level of Europe’s largest competitors, becoming a key driver of regional and national development.
William Stephens and his brother John were not just industrialists but also pioneers in civic responsibility. They established an industry that provided medical care, education, and cultural activities for workers and their families. More than just a factory, the Stephens created an entire village.
Even during the destructive and oppressive Napoleonic invasion, the town endured and, with the resurgence of the royal glass factory, reclaimed its status as a major industrial hub that still thrives today.
